Play 04 · The first call
The first call script
- When
- One call per shortlisted company, same week
- Time
- Forty-five minutes per call
- Who
- You and whoever will manage the relationship
- Output
- Twelve answers per company, written down during the call
Purpose
The first call is an interview, not a pitch. Ask the same twelve questions of each company in the same order and write the answers down as they are given. The questions are two per criterion: the people, the method, price and terms, results, local presence, and the work itself. The direct-answer property publishes them with what a good answer sounds like.
The checklist
13 items · ticks stay in this browserWhy a script
Three calls without a script produce three impressions that cannot be compared. Three calls with the same twelve questions in the same order produce three sets of answers that can be laid side by side. The script also protects against the good salesperson: a company that steers the conversation to its strengths is answering its own questions, not yours.
Sending the goals page first
A company that has read your goals before the call can talk about your business; one that has not will talk about itself. Send the one page from the baseline pack, not the whole pack, the day before. How much of the call refers to it is itself a finding.
The answer that matters most
Who will work on the account, and whether that person is on the call. Everything else in the relationship runs through that person. A company that names someone and puts them on the next call has passed the first criterion in a way its website cannot; one that says “our team” has told you the account will be one of many.
After the calls
Lay the three sets of answers beside the six-check rows from play 01. Then compare the quotes when they arrive, which is the next play, and only then read the contract of the one you prefer.
Done when
Twelve written answers per company, the sample audit and report received from each that offered them, and one line per company on how the call felt.
If it goes wrong
- A company refuses a question as a category: that is the answer. Note it and move on.
- A company guarantees a ranking: end the shortlist entry. It is the first entry on the direct-answer property's red flags page.
- The sample report never arrives: chase once, then treat it as absent.
