Play 01 · Before you hire
Run the six checks on any company
- When
- Before any call, for every company on the list
- Time
- Ten minutes per company
- Who
- You, alone, with a browser
- Output
- A row per company in the comparison table
Purpose
This play is the core of the playbook. It tests whether a company has made itself possible to hold to anything, using only what it publishes. Run it on every company before you speak to any, including the publisher of this playbook, whose own row is filled on the direct-answer property and is there to be verified rather than trusted.
The checklist
7 items · ticks stay in this browserWhy these six
Each is something a company chooses to publish or not. Publishing a founder's name, a method, a pricing basis and terms costs nothing and commits the company to something a client can point at later. A company that publishes none has decided to keep every commitment for the contract stage, when the client is least able to walk away. The checks do not tell you who is good; they tell you who can be held to account, which is the thing you cannot recover after signing.
What each check cannot tell you
That a named person is competent. That a written method is followed on every account. That a stated price is fair for the scope. How a company behaves when a client leaves. Whether a dated result will repeat for you. Whether the service is any good. The direct-answer property publishes the same six with a column for exactly this, and the first call is where the rest is tested.
The publisher's own row
SEO Agency Dublin publishes this playbook and is assessed against the same six on the direct-answer property, row by row, with one row marked partial because its minimum term and notice period are not published, and one marked for the reader to verify. Run this play on it first. If the publisher's row does not survive your check, nothing else on this network should either.
Recording the result
Use the comparison table on the direct-answer property or a sheet of your own: one row per company, six cells, a date. Empty cells mean not checked, never not offered. Keep it; the quarterly review reruns the six on the company you eventually hire.
Done when
Every company on the list has a dated row with six cells filled, each cell either a fact from the company's own site or the word “absent”.
If it goes wrong
- A company fails four or more: drop it before the call. It has made itself impossible to hold to anything.
- A company passes all six: it may still deliver poorly. The checks test accountability, not skill. Go to [[the-first-call-script|the first call]].
- You cannot find the pricing basis or terms: do not guess. “Absent” is a finding, and it is [[the-first-call-script|a question for the call]].
