Purpose
A company that starts with a baseline pack skips the month it would otherwise spend finding out where you are, and you can judge its first report against your own numbers. The pack is four documents: goals and target area, the baseline measurements, an inventory of every account and who owns it, and a record of what has already been done.

Every SEO engagement begins with an audit, and most companies spend their first month on it. A business that arrives with its goals, its numbers, its accounts and its history has done most of that month's work and can spend the retainer on changes instead. It also has something the company cannot take away: an independent record of where things stood on day one, which every later report is measured against.
The four documents
Goals. What you want to appear for, where, and what you count as a result. The handbook's second chapter is the method, and it takes an hour.
Baseline. Where you are today, measured: positions from your own address, Search Console for three months, calls and enquiries for three months, the profile's rating, review count and last post. Dated.
Access inventory. Every account the work will touch, who holds the login, and whether the business owns it. This is the document that prevents the commonest disaster, a departing contractor holding the profile.
Work done. Who has worked on this before, what they did, when it ended and why. Listings and links that already exist. The company you hire will otherwise redo it, or undo it.
What it is worth
Handing the pack over on day one changes the first call from a pitch into a briefing, and changes the first report from a set of the company's numbers into a comparison with yours. The audit review and the ninety-day checkpoint both assume it exists.
Done when
A dated folder with four documents that a stranger could read and understand the business's search position, its accounts and its history in an hour.
If it goes wrong
- You do not know who owns an account: that is the finding. Recover it before hiring; [[onboarding-and-access|play 07]] depends on it.
- There is no previous work to record: say so. An honest blank beats a guess.
- The baseline takes longer than two hours: that is normal for a business that has never measured. It is still the best two hours in the process.
