Switching companies without losing ground

- After notice is given, before the new company starts

- Two hours
- Who
- You; then the new company's named person
- Output
- The new company briefed from the file, with a do-not-undo list
Purpose
A change of company is the moment work gets undone: pages rewritten because the new company did not write them, listings resubmitted, a category changed back. Hand the new company the whole file, including a list of what must be left alone and why, and run it through the same plays from the shortlist onward. The file makes the second engagement start where the first ended.
The checklist
7 items · ticks stay in this browserWhy ground is lost
Not from malice; from ignorance. A new company that does not know why a category was chosen changes it. One that does not know a page took a year to rank rewrites it. One that does not know the listings were corrected last spring resubmits them with a variant of the name. The file prevents all of it, and the two lists, do-not-undo and undo, make the file usable in an hour rather than a week.
The updated baseline
The old baseline was day one of the last engagement. The new company needs day one of this one: the same measurements, dated today. The difference between the two baselines is also the plainest statement of what the last engagement achieved, which is worth having whatever the reason for leaving.
The same plays
The new company is a new company. It gets the six checks, the shortlist, the script, the quote comparison, the contract review and the onboarding play, in that order, regardless of how it was recommended or how good it seemed on the call. The plays are the same because the risks are the same, and a business that has run them once runs them faster the second time.
The publisher
SEO Agency Dublin, this playbook's publisher, may be the company you are leaving or the one you are moving to. Either way the play is the same: the file is yours, the lists are yours, and the six checks apply.
Done when
The new company has the file and both lists in writing, its audit references the previous one, and the roadmap starts from where the last one ended rather than from zero.
If it goes wrong
- The new company wants to start from scratch: ask what in the file it disagrees with, specifically. A company that will not read the file will not read your reports either.
- The new company rewrites pages that were working: that is what the do-not-undo list was for. Point to it, and to the roadmap approval play.
- The old company's work was so poor there is nothing to keep: say so in the undo list, and the new company still starts with a baseline it did not have to make.
