Play 14 · Quarterly
The quarterly review
- When
- Every third month, in place of the monthly call
- Time
- One hour
- Who
- You and the company's named person
- Output
- A quarterly record: on course, adjust, or begin the renewal decision early
Purpose
Three months is long enough for a trend. The quarterly review reads the three monthly notes together, compares outcomes and visibility to the baseline and to the same quarter last year, checks how much of the roadmap is done, reruns the six checks on the company as it is now, and asks whether the goals page still describes the business. It ends with one of three verdicts.
The checklist
7 items · ticks stay in this browserWhy quarterly
A month is noise; a year is too late. Three months of notes read together show whether dates are being kept, whether outcomes are moving in the direction the baseline pointed, and whether the company is the one you hired. The quarterly review replaces one monthly call and takes twice as long, and it is the only regular point at which the question “should we continue” is asked calmly rather than at renewal.
Four comparisons
This quarter's outcomes against the baseline says whether anything has changed. Against the same quarter last year says whether the change is the work or the season. The visibility grid against day one says whether the local pack pattern has moved. Roadmap items done against items due says whether the plan is being followed. None of the four alone is a verdict; together they usually are.
Rerunning the six checks
The company you hired had a named person, a method, a pricing basis, terms, results and a presence. Companies change. The person leaves, the method page is quietly rewritten, the terms in the renewal differ from the terms you signed. Ten minutes rerunning play 01 on the company as it is now catches the drift before it becomes the reason the engagement failed.
The goals page
Businesses change too. A new service, a new premises, a district dropped. A roadmap built on a goals page that no longer describes the business will deliver the wrong results faithfully. Reread the page every quarter and rewrite it when it is wrong; the company should welcome the change, since it is the difference between working on your business and working on a document.
Done when
A dated quarterly record with the four comparisons, the six-check rerun, and a verdict both sides have seen.
If it goes wrong
- Outcomes are flat while rankings rose: the roadmap targets the wrong queries, or the site is not converting. Adjust, and say which.
- The named person has changed and nobody told you: criterion one has failed. It is a renewal question now, not a quarterly one.
- The goals page no longer fits the business: rewrite it, and expect the roadmap to change with it. That is an adjustment, not a failure.
