Purpose
SEO work leaves traces: a page with a new date, a profile with new photographs and answered reviews, a listing that now matches, a link on another site. A report lists what was done; this play opens the things and confirms they exist. It takes fifteen minutes and it is the difference between paying for a report and paying for work.
The checklist
7 items · ticks stay in this browserWhy open things
A report is a description of work. The work itself is pages, a profile, listings and links, all of which can be opened in a browser. A company that has done what it reports will have nothing to hide and everything to show; one that has not will have described the month in terms that cannot be checked. Fifteen minutes of opening things each month is the cheapest audit there is, and it keeps every later report honest.
What good traces look like
A page changed this month has a recent updated date, text that reads as written for your customers, and a link from the navigation. A profile worked on this month has photographs dated this month, replies under every review, and a post or two. A corrected listing shows the reference details exactly. An earned link sits in the body of a page on a site with a reason to mention you. Each is a trace a reader can see in seconds.
What poor traces look like
Pages that say the same thing as before with a keyword added. Photographs that are stock. Links from directories nobody visits or from sites in another country. A profile untouched for months while the report reads “profile optimisation ongoing”. None is proof of bad faith; all are questions for the call, and a pattern of them is a finding for the quarterly review.
The handbook as the reference
The handbook property of this network describes what each part of the work should produce, chapter by chapter, and a business that has read it knows what a trace of that work looks like. This play is the handbook applied in reverse: not doing the work, but recognising it.
Done when
Every item in the report's work-done list carries one of three marks, and anything not found is on the call agenda.
If it goes wrong
- A page the report calls new is a rewrite of a page you had: ask which is meant. Both are legitimate work; neither should be described as the other.
- Links come from sites you have never heard of with no connection to Dublin: ask where they came from. The direct-answer property's red flags page explains why.
- The profile has not changed in two months while the report lists profile work: this is the finding that matters most for a local business.
