Purpose
Leaving well takes a week of attention and prevents a year of trouble. Give notice in writing citing the contract. Send the handover list from the contract's handover clause. Collect every login, the last audit, the roadmap, the listings sheet and the links sheet. On the last day, revoke the company's access to every account and confirm that nothing exists in its name.

Most of what goes wrong after leaving an SEO company happens because access was never revoked and ownership was never checked. A former contractor still a manager on the profile. Analytics under a departed agency's login, with the history gone when the account closed. A domain that turns out to be registered to the agency. Every one of these is prevented by an hour on the last day with the access inventory open.
The handover clause
If play 06 was followed the contract has a handover clause and this play is the clause executed. If it was not, send the same list anyway: most companies hand over properly when asked clearly, and the ones that do not have identified themselves. The list is logins, documents, access removal, and a short period for questions.
Nothing in the company's name
Ask the question in writing and keep the answer. Accounts, listings, tracking numbers, content licences, tool subscriptions: anything created for your business during the engagement that is registered to the company rather than to you. A written no is what you want; a list is what you need before the last day.
Keeping the file
The exit record closes the file that began with the baseline pack. Everything in it, the pack, the checkpoint, the quarterly records, the notes, the exit, is what the next company receives on day one, and it is the reason the next engagement starts months ahead of the first.
Done when
The access inventory shows no company access anywhere, every document is in the file, and a written confirmation that nothing remains in the company's name.
If it goes wrong
- The company holds the profile as owner: request ownership transfer in writing, and if refused use Google's process for reclaiming a profile. Do not sign anything new to get it back.
- Content turns out to be licensed, not assigned: keep the pages up while you replace them; the [[switching-companies|next company]] needs to know.
- A tracking phone number was in the company's name: port it or replace it everywhere, including listings, before the number goes dead.
